Default 2001 Rubicon

Does anyone know of any inherant problems with the 2001 Rubi? I just bought one and the digital head went out..well not the whole head, only the speedo and trip are locked up and the sensor is good.. so says the dealer.. Any ideas? Also I`ve got OEM tires and want something that will improve traction in the mud loose sand etc. my buddy`s got a 450 ES foreman and just eats my lunch in the crawling department.

Hey there Kansas, if you are looking for tires check out the atvnews.com site and search for an article named Mud Bath it is all about the top ten big guys. Some really good information I'm sorry to say that the tires I want I can't get in Canada, the Bi/Tri Claws. I guess it might be the Mud Bugs or the 589's. Good luck picking it's going to be hard.

Thanks for the tips guys. I`ve heard a few things about the tranny and noticed Honda abondonded it for the Rincon and I guess became a little worried, but overall I`ve heard glowing reports for the most part on performance.

Stubble jumper right about the new 400AT. Also they still make the Rubicon and it is one of their most popular models. I'm a tech and am very familiar with them. I have replaced several speedo and angle sensors, and maybe a couple left handlebar switches, but haven't seen any combo meters fail. I wonder if the self diagnostics are being any help to your dealer? There are electrical tests for both the speedo and angle sensors, but they are both kinda iffy and it's much easier to just replace with a known good one (either can be replaced in a very few minutes). As for any other electrical problem, I would expect a connection problem first, and these can be tricky to find. I have seen a few problems back in the connectors to the ICM or MBB (mystious black box) mounted directly underneath the rear rack\fender , right behind the reg\rect (has cooling fins). This unit has two locking couplers to it, and they are good quality, but delicate (1mm pins) and can be damaged by probing with meter lead, or handling by ham handed individuals. Also had one harness rub through in that area, where it winds behind the frame to couple with the ICM. Also have seen problems with the connectors underneath the right sidecover, and in front of the engine, especially the angle sensor wire harness ( taken out by tree branch, corn stalk, etc.).
If your combometer is bad for no good reason (accident or swimming), ask them to call Honda, or call them yourself, have your VIN handy, and act reasonable and adult, make sure you tell them about the other Honda's you own (they like the loyal customer). Don't expect the customer service person to make the decision, but the call will go to technical services and they will call your dealer. You never know, they may buy your repair if it is legit.
