I'm looking at sport quads right now. Can't afford to buy a new one so maybe a 400ex would do the trick.

How fast could I make it go for 600$ Canadian (400$ US).

Lol 400$ sounds pathetic to upgrade a quad, so maybe a little more, whatever.

Your best bang for the buck would be doing something similar to my combo. A slip-on pipe, piston, and camshaft. Combine that with a ported(welds ground out) stock header and she'll beat piped Z-400's all day and run competitively with stock Raptors and Banshees. However those mods will run more like $500.00. If you can find a used EX with a pipe already on it then the piston and cam can be done for about $300.00.

 

For $600 candaian you wont be able to get much. My brother got a K&N power kit that was a little over $200 and the rest of your $400 left would probally get you a nice complete exhaust system.

I don't want to sacrifice reliability for power. Well not too much anyway.

Also what cam are u using?? I was thinking Hotcam Stage I.

And, grinding out the welds on the header pipe, can that be done yourself (not really mechanically inclined :-( ), whats involved.

If you are not wanting to put in the cam and piston i would recommend getting a slip on pipe, grinding the welds on the header pipe, getting a K&N, and rejetting it. I just put a white brothers e series pipe on and did all the stuff i listed and what a wake up call it gave the power.

XR400 base gasket (thinner-in order to make sure you have true 11:1 compression): $Don't know-minimal
XR400 Cam:$160...you could save some cash here and use a hot cam ($130), but I would stay with stage 1.
This will eat Z400's and hang with raptors. And if you stay with the XR cam, you have all stock reliability. You won't have to worry about your starter going out or tranny screwing up like raptors...

 

does removing the choke really give more power??

 

I know for around 500 canadian you can get a 440 kit with a 11:1 piston.
