My 99 recon was clocked by a friend driving alongside with his 450es at 72 kmh which is approximately 45mph. This was done on a hard packed level dirt road. Two other 99 Recons owned by members of my family run about this speed on top end also.
I also ran a 300 2wd honda from 0 mph. The Recon would get a 3-4 length jump but the 300 would verrrrrry slowly gain this back and take the lead.

Kevin, I tend to believe your answer for the Recon. The larger motors in the trx300 and Rancher were designed for power at the low end and mid-range power, not top speed.

Rooster, I thought the 300ex was faster than that too but Feb2000 ATVSport magazine just did a test to a stock 1999 300ex. Top speed on radar 45.4mph. I don't believe everything I read, but it makes more sense.

umm lets see, i know that the 300EX doesnt go 45, maybe in 4th gear, but the topend is 56mph, and the recon is a little less than 50mph.
