Sounds like it could be your clutch. Does it occur with the transmission in neutral, or in gear, or both? Does your bike lose engine braking when going downhill when the engine speed is at idle? If so, that's another indication of a clutch problem. I would guess that its the centrifugal clutch (as opposed to the change clutch) and its drum is worn or grooved. Unless someone with more experience responds, it seems a removal of the side cover and an inspection of the clutches is in order. Good luck.

Just wondering but if the clutch basket is worn does that mean that it has to be replaced if it is working properly.

if your basket is worn file the teeth down so the plates will slide it makes a big difference

My friend has an '86 200SX and his does the same thing. I used to have an '84 200S and it had practically the same motor. I'm pretty sure the manual said it was what I think they called and oil rotor that was spinning. You were actually supposed to take that part of the case off and clean in when ever you change the oil, I never did it, so I wouldn't know if that would help it or not. This might be the problem, not sure though.
