There are two lines on the flywheel, an F mark (for ignition timing), and a T mark (for cam timing). You view them through the "window" on the left engine cover (the one with the large flatblade plug). There is an O mark on the cam that faces a V notch on the top valve cover when the flywheel is in the T position. There is a line on the pulse generator that lines up with the line in the timing advance rotor when the flywheel F mark shows in the window. There are also two O's on the timing advance plate and rotor in case the timing advance was disassembled. It is possible to get this 180 degrees off and your bike will not start.

Your welcome bilcodybil. I've been a line tech for nearly 20 years now, more like 25 if you count my part time years. I used to work on atv's by the hundreds before anyone even had a four wheeler out! I remember them well and fondly. Any more questions about your 185 post them, and I will try to help.

i put it in time but it still will not start. how much comprestion should it have because i took the head off and the rings looked to be in good shape.its getting spark but it will not hit or back fire or do any thing the plug is getting gas on it.would it back fire if it had a bent valve. thats the only other thing i can think of. i was riding it and it just acted like it ran out of gas so i thougt it jumped time .any ideals?
