Pro Rider
Just keep in mind that a rear mounted spreader will need connection to the battery.
I purchased a pull-behind a couple of months back to spread fertilizer and oats. It only cost $50 and should be fine considering that it will be used only once or twice a year. I have seen other models that hold more for about $150.

Weekend Warrior
I made my own for less than 50 bucks.
I used a 7 gal pickle bucket, an old 12v feeder motor, and some 1/2" square tubing.
You can buy a 12v accessory cord at Radioshack for around 6.00dollars, comes w/ a built in on / off switch.
