Logging with ATV
#1
Hey guys,
I am looking to buy vacant land and want to log it out. I was at a logging show last year and they had a product on that I would be able to tow the logs out of the bush with my ATV. I can just tow it behind me because the frotn end will drag. Does anybody have any ideas or have they seen a similar product?
Thanks in advance!

When I go elk hunting, I tow logs to camp with my Prairie 650. I think the biggest I towed was about 16" in diameter and about 20-25' long, but it was pretty dryed out. I guess what I am saying is, just cut the logs to a size that your ATV can reasonalbly tow, attach a tow rope, and hammer down the throttle.

I agree with Dextreme, but I'd say to get a 6-8 foot chain to attach to the log and then attach the tow rope to the chain. I'm getting ready to do a little logging on my mom's farm and that was my plan. Good luck.

If the log is any size at all and the end digs in, the ATV will come to an abrupt stop and you'll do a flying W over the handlebars.... Montana Jacks sells a log skidder which will work for the small stuff. They say it tows 20" logs, 20' long with no problem. It may be what you need. Forestry Suppliers (Internet) has a wheeled skidder for more money. Timber operators (Midwest) will pull skidders with Bobcats.
Before you cut anything do a timber survey. Identify each tree you want to cut, it's diameter, breast height, and number of 16' logs in it. Go to Forrestry Suppliers on the Internet and buy a Log rule for $10 to do the measurements. You could have some treasures. Veneer quality Walnut has been going for $7,000 per log. As I recall the high was $20,000 per for a really nice veneer quality Black Walnut. These prices are US dollars on the stump in Missouri. Black Walnut is rightly called "Black Gold".
If you have Black Gold, you may not want to cut it yourself. You can destroy it's value if logged improperly. A timber company will pay you for it on the stump, before it is cut. If they damage it, it's their problem.

I think that you're looking for a type of log arch. Here are some:

If this is enough to get you going, do a Google on "log arch"
I'm an arborist and I use my Grizzly for moving some hellacious large logs. I have ballast on the front to keep the wheels down. Sometimes someone has to sit on the front rack too.
