are you serious ???
Sure why not? The ballistics of the 7.62x39 is adequate for deer. The ballistics are pretty similar to our venerable Winchester 30/30. I've shot deer with both my AK type rifle and an SKS. The AK (the SKS too) has pretty decent accuracy and points well. It works particularly well in heavy brush with shorter range shots and it shoulders and points quickly for that type of hunting. I've used it with both the iron sights and a reflex type scope and it makes a nifty all around package. The SKS when outfitted with a inexpensive scope makes an extremely inexpensive 100 yard deer rifle. I don't think I have much over 100 dollars invested in my SKS and it shoots decent groups especially with the scope. The AK and SKS will absorb punishment that would destroy most other rifles. It is pretty difficult to break one. For situations 150-200 yards and under, heavy brush, rugged conditions such as bad weather or getting bounced around on an ATV or behind a truck seat the AK really shines. I feel bad about taking my nice shiny Remington 7400 out in such conditions but the AK is in it's element. The AK or SKS will take abuse that would leave my Remington either in pieces or begging for the gunsmith. Freeze it, drop it in the mud and water, bounce it around behind a truck seat for a year with no maintenance and it will still go bang and function flawlessly when you need it to.

My first and probably one of my favorite deer rifles was an HK-91. Rugged, .308 caliber, amazingly accurate and absolutely dependable. Mine was topped with a Leupold 3x9 scope and had a folding bi pod. An outstanding rifle that I deeply regret selling.

My next deer rifle will most likely be a Remington 700 in .300 Remington Ultra mag. Springfield Armory has a new M-1 style rifle with a short 16 inch barrel called the SOCOM 16 which I'd really like to get my hands on after I get the Remington.

It may be legal to shoot your SKS or AK47 in your state, but dont try bringing that thing into Canada to shoot a deer. unless you are goiong to try and shoot a polar bear 7 or 11 times. LOL

I know you didnt say you were bringing it here, but use this info as a future reference.

"novaSS your 50 bmg single shot, bolt action or semi auto" ?

Shell Holder / bolt action. I had it made by the late Klaus Horsecamp ( owner designer of State Arms rifles) a few weeks before he was killed in a car accident.

It use a Walther 1 in 15" twist SS barrel with muzzle brake and laminated stock. Weighs in at 38 LBS so it not something you shot off shoulder out of a tree stand. I get 3 shot gropes of under 1" at 300 yards.

Lighten up on the powder!!
My favorite deer rifle is the .22-250, its flat shooting and its light. I can drop a buck right where it is, so its got the power and speed.
The .243 is my favorite rifle all around, I drop elk at 400 yards.
These two rifles are in the Remington 700 BDL, byfar the best rifle for the money!
I live and hunt in utah, so you have to be able to drop what you shoot, otherwise the jerk in the next canyon shoots it where it falls and claims it is his!

5 spikes in 5 years, Utah still has the little ones!

Only deer rifle I own is a Winchester Model 70, .270 with 3x9 scope. Sad thing is I've never done anything with it accept target shoot. But of course everyone knows that here in liberal California we're not suppose to have guns.
