For deer I bring my 270 Remington 700BDL with Leopold 3X9. Also have Sako 30.06 with +2" barrel that I picked up in a gun show pretty reasonably that I planned on using with hot hand loads for elk but havn't got around to it yet. The 270 will pretty much do it all from larger varmints to elk.
The 270 is generally considered one of the more accurate calibers because even the young, the old, and the rookies can handle the light recoil and don't mind practicing with it at the range. Most hard core shooters and wannabees don't have much interest in the 270 anymore because of all the hotter options on the market.

8mm Mauser that was given to me by a great friend when he had to give up hunting (medical reasons). I cherish that gun and truely enjoy taking deer with it. I once missjudged the wind on a deer at 150 yards and hit her in the shoulder, shattering both shoulders and rendering the meat from the area useless. AHHHHHHHHHHHH, I was so mad, but on a positive note, she never knew what hit her and she was dead before she hit the ground.

That 8mm is an excellent deer stopper.

I occasionally hunt with a couple of old guys who are real characters. One hunts with a Mauser 98 (in 8mm Mauser of course) and the other hunts with an M-1 Garand. The standard joke is that they are fighting WW2 in the woods. If they make it out in the woods this year I 'll be sure to go with them. Just hearing all of their stories is about as good as the hunting itself. I told them I was going to take an AK and my friend will take an M-14 so we will have representatives from the Vietnam era to go with the WW2 era.
If we had a couple more guys with another mauser and a US 1903 springfield we could have WW1 covered as well. Maybe that will be the motivation to get the old guys out in the woods next year.

.257 Ackley Improved -- lightweight custom rifle -- Remington M-7 action -- Pac-nor 22" barrel with Brown precision "poundr" stock (16oz.) and Shilen trigger. The whole thing, including a 3x9 Leupold compact scope, weighs about 6 3/4 lbs.

The older I get, the lighter my rifles get, and the more "comfort" I want.
