Official Says Slaying Of 5 Hunters 'Absolutely Nuts'
Three Men, One Teenage Boy, One Woman Slain

BIRCHWOOD, Wis. -- A police official said it's "absolutely nuts" that a dispute over a hunting location apparently led to the shooting deaths of five people in Wisconsin.

5 People Killed In Dispute Over Tree Stand

Tim Zeigle said a confrontation took place between the suspect and other deer hunters after a dispute about a tree stand.

The suspect is a 36-year-old man from St. Paul, Minn.

The suspect, who has been arrested, is accused of killing five deer hunters and injuring three more in a rampage in northwestern Wisconsin.

Authorities said 36-year-old Chai Vang opened fire Sunday after a dispute over a tree stand.

Zeigle said two hunters were returning to their cabin on private land in the Town of Meteor, Wis., when they saw Vang in one of their tree stands. A confrontation and shooting followed.

Zeigle said both men radioed back to the cabin. Then other hunters responded and were shot. Some of the victims may have shot back. He added that that some of the victims were shot more than once.

Police said Vang was "chasing after them and killing them." They said he was "sniping" at the victims with an assault-style rifle.

Police respond to the scene after a hunter opens fire, killing five hunters and injuring three others.

The dead included four males and a woman. One of the males was a teenager.

The suspect is identified as a Minnesota man.

TV station KSMP of Eden Prairie, Minn., reported that the suspect almost got away. He got lost in the woods and two hunters helped him find his way out. But when he emerged from the woods, an officer recognized the deer license on his back, based on a victim's description. Police said the two men who helped him out were lucky because he was out of bullets.

The TV report also said the suspect was in camouflage, which is unusual, because hunters usually wear orange.

After the shootings erupted, a town official said deputies drove up and down the roads using loudspeakers to alert hunters to get out of the woods.

Meteor Chairman Dale Olson said shootings "just don't happen" in these parts. But he said the area attracts out-of-towners, and acknowledges "even neighbors" can fight over deer.

One of those wounded, a man, is listed in critical condition.

Denny Drew and Lauren Hesebeck were taken to Lakeview Medical Center in Rice Lake, Wis. Drew is listed in serious condition and Hesebeck in stable condition.

Shootings Upset Deer Hunters
One long-time hunter said, "You don't expect somebody to try to shoot you and murder you" when you're deer hunting.

Bill Wagner was deer hunting with about 20 other people in northwestern Wisconsin when the deer-stand shooting took place.

Wagner said the incident is "very upsetting" but won't keep him from hunting.

The shootings happened in the town of Meteor. An official in a nearby town said people take the state's nine-day-long deer hunt seriously. They take off work and schools are closed.

I heard on the radio that the suspect got out of the disputed stand walked about 40 yards and then turned around and started firing. He prolly heard them calling for help, and hid waiting for the others to show up.
