Good advice and if I had a drill press and serious grinder, I'd surely have done the same thing. Without having those items, I thought the $20 was a good buy. Anybody where I live wants a half-hour just to turn the power on or strike a torch and I can't say as I blame them. I did get away from chains many years ago and use 3/8" SS cable for logging chokers and pull lines with the truck and quad. We get enough rain in the winter here that one almost has to carry steel chains in a bucket of oil. 18" in Dec/Jan.
