I severly dislike squirrels, Martin and Ermine as weel. Always seem to be getting into something in my cabin. I shoot them with my 45ACP any time I have the chance while I am there. If you hit them they don't run off and the birds clean up the pieces.

My daughter prefers the 410 though. To each their own..

eat em if you kill em. I've taken several myself and do not waste a bite with a good headshot.

Squirrels are good eating. Forty years ago, I wouldn't have had to say that. Everyone knew it. Squirrels were a lot more scarce then for that reason. Outdoor magazines carried articles on strategies for squirrel hunting. A tree that attracts successive families of squirrels would have been considered an asset.

Times have changed.

The old timers will tell you that back in the day, before whitetail deer were as plentiful as they are now, the opening day of squirrel season was every bit as big of a day as the opening day of deer season is now. Instead of people talking about the accuracy of their deer rifles they were instead talking about the accuracy of their squirrel rifles.

As it so happens I've filled all of my deer tags so this afternoon I'm going out to shoot a bunch of squirrels. And yes I do indeed have a dedicated “squirrel rifle” - a scoped and modified stainless steel Ruger 10/22.

You probably have the same Ruger I have. Synthetic stock, stainless steel 10/22 LR. I used to use it for squirrels, but prefer using my air gun now that it has a real good scope on it. Plus I like to have a bit of a challenge using the airgun, makes hunting them more challenging. There is just one more squirrel running around here, just saw him 10 minutes ago. His days are numbered.

Squirrel season just opened here Aug. 15th. Going to do some hunting this weekend in between food plots and feeder maintenance.
My squirrel gun is a Marlin model 60 stainless steel with a 3-9 x 40 scope, can hit 'em in the eye @ 60 yards.
