I am about to buy a mower for my Foreman 400 to mow about 4 acres. Do any of you mow with a quad? If so, do you have any tips for buying one? Is the push or pull type better? Any input would be appreciated.

Greetings,

I just bought a mower for my ATV after spending about two years thinking about it – so here are my thoughts.

While the push-type mower offers a greater level of control, it also appears to be for lawns, not fields. I also thought that the control arm that reaches back was a prime candidate for an early failure – I could just see it being ripped off by a branch or being bent going into the garage.

I also looked at the bush hog style rotary mowers. There was a professional landscaper who used to visit the forum who felt (based on experience) that all the popular models would not hold up very well. I was tempted to go with the Cycle Country rough-cut or similar models offered by Northern, and I also looked at a similar model by Rhino. The Rhino looked like the most serious machine of the pack. But I went with a third option.

A guy down the valley had a flail mower and everyone thought this was the best invention since sliced bread. It cut everything, did a very nice job of it, and threw all of the clippings straight down (not flinging of rocks et al). It was impervious to lumps and bumps and took a lot less damage from rocks – the chains just bounce away. They are also much smaller to maneuver and store since they just use a shaft over the axle – i.e. no big mower deck with out-set wheels. After a long search, the only manufacturer I found was Alamo and they had just discontinued the self-powered model. After another long search I found two sitting in a warehouse in Towanda PA. They had an optional Honda engine and a few other extras that made them a bit expensive, but hey, how often do you buy something like this, so I got one. I really like it – it is easy to pull and control, and you can go pretty fast with it and still make a clean job of it.

So that’s my story. I’m sure you’ll have a good time with whatever you get – nothing satisfies like a clean field.
