Default Which GPS?

I'm going to Moab this spring and need to get a GPS. I'm thinking the Garmin Vista or the Magellen Platnium. Any info on the GPS or Moab would be great.
Thanks

I use Garmin only, their SW menus are pretty intuitive.

Default Which GPS?

I bought a Garmin Legend last weekend. I paid the extra $100 to get the better basemaps. On the way home I was playing with it in the car(buddy was driving), noticed that the maps were not very detailed. When I got it home and started really looking at it, I was really dissappointed.

I thought it would show me where I was in relation to streams, small lakes, etc. Alls it would show was that I was south of the major highway. When I called Cabela's, they said that is the way they all are, and if I wanted more detail, I would have to buy the MapSource CD for another $100!!

Needless to say, it went back to Cabela's on Monday.

BrianT .. how much did you pay total???? the Legend is around $225 now .. I have the Garmin eTrex Legend as well ... I also have most of the Map Source CD's ... They're great! It WILL tell you if you're next to a stream .. and what it's name is. I've had my Legend for a few years now .. and love it ... The ONLY downside I see is you're limited to 8MB of memory .... If you use MapSource you'll fill it up ... However, you'll have TONS of info in there ...

I got it for $200 w/ a rebate at Cabela's. But the Mapsource was another $100. That was more than I was able to spend. Sounds like I need to keep saving or wait til the price gets driven down some more!

The price sounds right ... Now, I've heard "Evaluation" copies (Wink Wink) of MapSource can be downloaded for "free" off the internet ..... NOT that I speak from experience ... If you'd like to "Try" it ... search Kazaa... Ther're out there....

I checked those out the night I bought it (wink, wink, nod, nod). But was a little afraid to add software to something that I thought I might have to return. I did go to Garmin.com and update the installed software on the Legend. For my $200 investment, I wasn't satisfied with the detail of the map program.

The way technology advances, and prices decrease, I'll be buying one in no time!

I've got the Garmin Etrex Vista and Mapsource and it's great. I have a handlebar mount on my Cannondale, if it stays on that ride it'll stay on anything. My last ride a couple weeks ago was very muddy and I had to keep wiping the mud off the screen but had no problems with the unit.

If you wanna see just how much mud this withstood, checkout the pics from the ride ride pics

Default Which GPS?

hi guys
If you want to get the best from your gps buy the program oziexplorer and put it on your computer. You can download maps, air photos , scan maps etc. never have to worry about storage space. can download info from gps to program. can download waypoints and tracks back to gps. i use mine every time i go out and come back home and download info to computer. my gps doesnt download maps but i can download manually created , accurate waypoints or tracks or routes back to gps that i can find my way anywhere. This works even better if your gps has maps in it.
give the sample program a try, you will love the flexability it gives you. i wished i had bought the program years ago.
