Default .45 or 9mm

Well i was just wonder what you guys think of the Ruger P-90 .45 ACP Auto and the Ruger 9mm. I just wanted it for when i am pheasant hunting and a coyote runs out and when we go up north to bear country for protection.......Does a 9mm provide enough protection againts bears. Or just the .45.....Well what do you guys think?

ruger's are pretty great. I personally have a p 90 45 and like it. However, if your gonna get a gun for accuracy for hunting get a revolver. 6" barrel or better. it took a long time and alot of rounds before I could hit a pie plate at 25 yards.

I don't know what kind of "protection" you need from bears though. I live in upper Michigan and never had a problem. They are not aggressive and will run away probably before you ever see them.
if you want a cool semi auto to plink with or finish a coyote, or even "protect" yourself from the bears, and I say that with a smile, Just buy a ruger semi auto 22. I have one and it always goes to the woods with me. I can shoot 500 rounds for the same ten bucks you will spend on 50 for the other calibers. And I have two .45's and a 357 but my choice in the woods is always the .22. just my .02.

I own own both a 9mm and a 45acp and would not recommend either of them for self-defense against a bear. A coyote yes, but a bear no! You should be looking at a .44magnum. The .44 is the only one with the balistics to even come close to stopping a bear. If you shot a bear with a 9mm you will probably **** him off especially if you were using hollow points. The bears hide is really thick and the hollow point would mushroom instantly and not penetrate at all. The.45acp would be more powerfull then the 9mm but still not enough. The .44magnum would be my choice. It is definately a hand full but it would be for self defense not target shooting. If you choose to go with 9mm or the .45acp use FMJ ball rounds no hollow points, because these will mushroom minimally upon impact and hopefully penetrate sufficiently. Also, with the .44 your shot placement isn't as critical as with the other two. With the other two try for the head but thats hard to do in a high pressure situation, thats why my choice would be the .44. Hope this helps with you decision.

Well a .22 will only **** off a bear if you ever did run into one.....how accurate is a 9mm and why is the .45 so unaccurate? by the way how much did you pay for youur P90? 379$ or so? they retail for 525$ well just wondering.....oh yeah and how much does the p90 kick?

i have a p90dc in 45 and love it. pretty smooth shooter.
it's twice the slug of a 9mm.....i have been known to carry a 9mm in a shoulder holster, but the 45 is too big to conceal, so it goes under the seat of the truck, JIC.
yes i have a permit

I had a taurus 45 a while back and couldnt hit anything! the ruger hits what you aim it at....

it's my avatar!

Polarisman3 – it’s not that the .45 in not accurate but rather too slow. A .44 or .357 would be my choice

Get a Smith, or beretta 9, or go with a Colt, Springfield, Kimber, or Smith 45.

If you REALLY want a nice 45, go with a Les Bauer, Ed Brown, or Wilson!

The 9 and 45 don't have what is needed to stop a bear. They both would work well for the coyote. You will have to practice though.

Ted Nugent ofcourse would not agree though. He uses a 10 mm.

For stopping a bear you the 44 mag. A bit to handle one handed though.

Sorry, you are correct on the bear thing.

I was just talking quality/accuracy wise.

You are right about your firearms. I have shot Kimbers before. Man what a nice firearm. I have a Springfield 45 acp too.

Ofcourse the Les Bauer, Ed Brown, or Wilson would be great if you can afford one.
