Recreational riding
I am new to this and looking to get some advice. I want to get something powerful enough to haul me and my 2 year old son around our 1 acre back yard. There's not any woods or trees in our backyard, just a fenced in 1 acre flat grassy area. I don't need it to go fast, just enough to carry me and my son. Since this is all I'm looking to do, I prefer to get a used one. What should I get and how much power would be suffice? How much should I plan to spend on a used one and if the price is not that much different, I can buy a new one for the sake of having warranty. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum. You can pretty much do what you are describing on a 250 or greater machine. Honda Recon comes to mind along with the Suzuki Ozark and Kawasaki Bayou. Fun little machines that are super reliable and simple to operate. If you plan on going out on trail systems eventually, check with your local laws about 2-up riding. Some states are requiring 2-up built machines for 2-up riding. You can get the quads I mentioned used but they aren't too bad price-wise new.

I'd say if all your doing is driving around flat ground on your own property a 300 sized or around that size would be just fine. I don't believe riding two up will pose any problem on a flat even surface. Now, if you are trail riding, going over stumps, rocks, etc. then a two up would be worth the investment.

I never every seen my old 1987 Yamaha 250 Moto 4 ever run out of wheel turning power.
Its more about chassis size for room to me.
There are 3 sizes, small, mid and Full. Some manufacturers use a smaller Mid chassis in a 400 class ATV like 420 Rancher or 450 Grizzly but A Suzuki 450 KQ has the same full size chassis as there 750 KQ and Arctic Cats 400s use to have the same frames as there full size 650s.
The old 335 Sportsmans was the same size as there full sizes Sportsman 800 and XP850 physically speaking, yet if it was in low range it would still pull a stump out of the ground.
