Default 1994 polaris 300 explorer 4x4 no high gear

this problem just started, won't shift into high gear...makes a grinding sound when I try, everything else has been great on this ATV, I'm the original owner, snow plow with it, trail mow with it, now just can't do much trail riding w/out the H gear. Please help, all suggestions welcome. Thnx.

Check that the levers on the transmission are tight first.Usually it's wear in the shift box itself or the linkage gets out of adjustment. Shift into neutral, remove the linkage ends from the shift box levers. Then check for excessive slack forward and reverse on the shift lever while still in neutral. If there is a lot of play a linkage adjustment may not help or it may help for awhile. Loosen the 10mm lock nuts on the linkage rod ends and while still in neutral turn the linkage ends to where they drop straight into the shift box levers with no resistance or pulling!!Then tighten the lock nuts. See if you have a positive forward and a positive reverse with out any grinding. Problem is most people just use high range 90% of the time as it takes the blunt of the wear in the shift box parts and linkage ends. Usually low engage fine. Same thing on awd,if there is too much wear on internal box parts, even if you can get it into high range, sometime the awd wont light up/engage unless you push forward on the lever. It can't touch the gear position switch in the box.
