Kaws in the Mud
#1
For the longest time I have had to sit back and read post where people use the ground clearance and not good mudders argument to boast there quads against the king kaw. With my only expierance being with a simple mud hole run switching between a pol 700 and my kaw I had to admit that the pol did seem to ramble through the mud a bit better and was easier to control...kaw smoked it climbing and in the rough...but it did seem to have an edge in the mud. So with minimal experience in the mud area and my only reference being what was oultined above I felt I couldnt really argue their feedback...hills and offcamber is a different story...been there and done that...but limited mud experience. I recently changed all four tires from stock to dirt devils...I know they are not the best mudding tires but I have only run into good mudding conditions twice since owning the thing, so i felt mud tires would be under used. We went up the the mountains the past weekend and ran into some wicked trails and snow run-offs...thus muddy conditions. The PRIARIE shined...it was going through washed out trails other bikes avoided or were getting stuck with no problem...didnt even use the locker. One mud run, everyone warned me not to do as their was a huge mud hole that dropped sharply and rose sharply and then went into mud almost seat high. There was yamaha's and pols (no honda's or suks) there telling me with the limited ground clearance of the priarie and unable to get a good running start that the bike would not make it and no one wanted to try to pull a 600 pound quad out of mud...basically ours couldnt make it so yours wont and despite you helping us we dont really want to help you (kidding partners). So, in my over confident and cocky manner i flipped the 4x4 switch, grabbed the locker, crawled her down the front of the mud hole and gunned her out of it, front end come up and she popped down in the mud and went through not deviating once from where she was pointed and didnt even SLOW down...she just ripped...everyone there just had to smile...none bigger then mine however. I know the stock tires are junk and the dirt devils helped...but the raw power that engine has to keep those wheels turning was amazing...that kaw out mudded everything that day...yea it may be rider (i doubt that) or tires or whatever...the fact is if you put that kaw on a level playing field it will score...so with just decent tires (which really helped out the cornering too...dont know if i need progressive shocks now) the mud ride of that thing is night and day...that or I just had an oppurtunity to open her up and see how she plays in the mud...you have to love that v-twin

that was well put. i had a similar experience with my p650 and it outshined a grizz, pol 500, pol 700 and a rincon in a nasty mudhole. i have the mudlites on mine and i have to say, i dont think i need the progressive springs anymore either. the cornering problem is pretty much down to a minimal now. and yeah, i LOVE that V-twin !!

I've had similar experiences, but also have had the opposite. Conditions and situations change. I just focus on having fun in the mud and ride with guys who don't care who gets stuck. We all do and we all help each other out regardless of machine.
We recently rode over 100 miles of varied terrain (with some radiator clogging machine eating mud) and the P650 did fantastic with my Bearclaws. Then I rode some gravy trails with one heavy use created sand slop hole and got stuck twice. I watched two Polaris manage to get through it. They took a different line than I did though. Maybe I was just tired after hand pulling a half dozen 2x4 machines through it also. In the end it doesn't matter. We still had fun.

Just recently I went with a few guys to Hurley, WI for a little MUD. It was a blast. They had a mud bog contest where 2 brand new 700 Sportsmans died right in the middle of and a new Honda did the same. They all eventually made it to the end. I was the last Quad to do the test and I BLASTED through it like a champ. The crowd Cheered and everybody was just asking,"What kinda Quad is that." It was awesome. I do have video of all!!! My quad was the biggest and most powerful one there. However, I had a little heat problem later I am going to post for some answers. In all... Mud is your Friend!!!
