Default Over Heating...WTF!!!

On a trip in Hurley, WI I was able to run through the mud and haul pretty good through the trails. After the dust picked up and I was done goofing around in the muddy water I noticed my Over Heat light was on. I looked in the radiator and saw a block of solid mud called a "radiator". Once cleaned out it was fine for a few miles but it continually overheated. My question is has anyone had this kind of problem? Can you do anything about dust build-up on top of a wet radiator-thus creating a solid block when dry? I need some help here I cannot have my quad go down like this. Possibly water wetter in the coolant? Give me a bone here folks...summer thrashing is starting The other 1000 quads had minor experiences in this but ALL the Kawi 650's there.... like 5 total had the same Over heating prob as mine. What's up with it? Plastics suck to remove when your radiator is crammed full of mud and on a trail of mud.

Thanks. (Oh yeah got the new picks in the bio now) .....they might still have to be approved.

BigMiks

I experienced the exact same problem about 3 weekends ago. Here is my post on it.

I will be ordering one of these very soon to bring along on our trip.

I think Water Wetter is an excellent idea also. Until I get the pressure washer, I've started bringing a spray bottle and this seems to help a lot when cleaning the rad.

Thanks for the info guys. I see I'm not the only cripple in the bunch. I will prob get the small pump. I used it on mine that same weekend and that thing can shoot for a good 20-30 feet with the pinpoint nozel they provide. The mud came out but the dust settled in and became a block again. The recommended thing was to clean it let it warm up and steam the water out of the fins or to get on the side and short the 2 wires to the temp sensor and just blow it out with the fans power. Fastest is the fan power. It did work till I got the need to rip throught the mud again

This is totoaly normal when mudd boggen. This is one of the many fears when going through muskeg. Iv seen many engines blown from riders making a huge splash in the pool of slop and then reving the hell out of it. if you really no how to drive this shouldnt happen. if you get mud into the rad the spray bottle is a good idea. remember velocity isnt everything when entering mud.

I have been using Purple Ice by Royal Purple. My fan runs a quarter of time it used to.
You should still clean your rad as often as possible.
I'm planning to modify my black plastic that covers the rad. I want to be able to remove them without screwdrivers, so I can clean them easily on the trail.
I am also thinking of adding some sort of water reservoir and a water pump, in order to wash out my rad at will. The reservoir must be able to be refilled at any water hole.

When you clean it by hand you are not getting all the mud out. I normally pull the plastic off to clean from back to front however for a quick job I have a water sprinkler on a long poll that I designed to in without taking the plastic off. One other note I would watch using pressure to clean the rad because those are fine fins on the rad. Also some people removed the black plastic under the rad... not a good idea. Dust build up has not been an issue for me.

I don't even own a pressure washer, but thank you for your advice.
I usually soak my rad without a nozzle, and then use my thumb to spray until the water comes out from the other side.
I wash my rad after every ride.

The sprinkler is a good idea. I have an old one that I can dismantle. It will fit behind the plastic easily.

Another thing you can do is buy a cheap bilge pump for a boat, just toss it in a creek or puddle after you get out of the mud and its like having a portable waterhose with you all the time. You can put and plug in adapter on it and just plug it into your DC port when you want it. You can get the pump at Walmart or anyplace that has a sporting goods or boat dept.
