Thats Suzuki's property, Kawi can't take the Z technology and chop it up for their own creation.
Don't let your friends bother you, get the big V and show them who is boss. You will be throwing roost to the moon on that bad boy.

It's not going to happen. It woud be way too expensive to build as it would be a completely new bike, from the ground up. New frame, new engine... because they don't have the engine as you think they do. You can't take a 440 hemi and make it smaller/lighter and still have 440 hemi with full power. It's not a matter of just taking the 700 and making it smaller, unless they have some form of sci-fi shrinking device. True they could use smaller bores, but you'ld just have a 600 lb bike w/20 fewer horsepower. You need all new castings for every part, then a new frame and drivetrain to make it work and lose weight... Even if they did make a 550cc v-twin, you would still be significantly heavier than with a 550cc single as it has twice the parts on the top end. And with the smaller bores you would be losing both the torque and hp advantages the V-twin is giving. If the size and weight really bothers you that much, don't get the V. Get the 400 and a BB kit, or a raptor or a DS or anything else that is already set up for what you want. These things are expensive, and it would really suck to spend that kind of cash and spend every waking moment regretting the purchase. You can get used raptors and Ds's really cheap if you shop around. I know of 1 of each right now that are unofficially for sale. 1 guys moving, the other wants a prarie ever since I let him ride mine. I almost did the same thing last week buying a new boat. I was settling for something that would work, but wasn't really what I was looking for. Thought about it and cancelled my order. The next day I found a boat set up like I actually wanted and spent about $4k less. Anyway, if the only thing you like about the bike is the big engine, look for something else. You'll probably be happier.
