KFX400 engine problem?
Check the vent hose under the ignition switch holder thingy. The hose comes off of the cap and pushes into the plastic cover thing. Under the plastic is another hose that is supposed to go down the steering stem. See if it's kinked under here.
Most guys are removing the lower vent hose altogether.
My friends wife's Z-400 quits running altogether and nobody not even 2 dealers can figure out why (bike is 8 mths old, only 10 hours on it or so). I think the CDI box is bad but it's a real expensive guess.
It wont quit for the dealer it only quits on us 30 miles from home.
The carbs on there bikes are very tempermental to elevation changes. I'm at 3100 ft and the bikes run ok.....get over 4000 ft they foul plugs and just run terrible.

KFX400 engine problem?
Thanks for the info Chris142.....I'll check out the hose under the "dash".....
Yesterday, I noticed it's still doing the same thing.....with a FULL tank of gas.....
I approached a medium steep, sandy hill.......with the tranny in 2nd gear......at really low speed, then "romped" on the throttle.....it revved, then sputtered, started missing.....revved some more, sputtered, but eventually made it over the hill.......
Sure, I could have downshifted, but I figured with the torque of this engine, it should "lug" over this hill at least without "missing, sputtering" and appearing to have engine problems?......
hmmmm.......I'm still stumped.......and I'm afraid I won't be able to demonstrate this to the dealer, since it only happens when the engine is "loaded" (going up a hill, at slower speeds, in 2nd or 3rd gear)......

Are you sure your not hitting the rev limiter while going up the hill ? If it is sand and you still have the stock tires your probably spinning while going up the hill and if your in 2nd it will hit the rev limiter . Try to approuch the hill in 2nd then up shift at the base of the hill and you should burn up it pretty good .

KFX400 engine problem?
could be, but I don't really think so.......for example, the other day, while out riding (with my 4yr old between me and handlebars), I approaced a medium-easy hill.....I was in 2nd gear, cruising toward it, at no more than 15mph......I'd guess my engine speed at 2500-3000rpm......as I neared the base of the hill, I started to increase the throttle.......once I got on the hill, the engine had sped up, but only to what I'd estimate at 4500-5000rpm (probably less)......in fact, if I'd have downshifted to 1st, it would have revved much higher, and the "engine miss" would have gone away......
It seems to only happen when I "load" the engine at a low speed/rpm...........So for now, the answer is simple....."Don't load the engine at such a low speed/rpm..." heh heh........
Honestly, I haven't revved the engine high enough yet, to even know what the forward rev limiter sounds like.......although, I've discovered the reverse limiter, and know it's sound all to well.....
