Default KFX400 engine problem?

I purchased by KFX a couple months ago.....I'm 35, so I've learned to take care of my toys and followed the recommended break-in procedure for the engine.....

Now, after 15 or so hours, I've started to open'er up......and have noticed, that when the engine is under a load (deep sand, ripping down the road in 4th or 5th gear or bogged down in sand while attempting to reverse out) the engine begins to "stall" or miss......It's really noticeable, and can create problems when I'm ripping up a steep hill......

I took it to the dealer yesterday, and all he said was this is a "common" situation with a lot of these engines, and I need to stop babying the engine and start hammering it!......

Today, I sunk the rear axle in deep, slimy mud, and couldn't go forward......when I put it in reverse to attempt to back up, the engine started "bogging down" and was running like crap!.....I had the trottle pegged, and it was missing, and sputtering.....I had to get off, spin the quad around!....

So....is it me, or is there something wrong with my engine?......Does this sound familiar to anyone with a KFX or similar engine?......

Please offer advice!.....

Thanks in advance!......

Default KFX400 engine problem?

I kind of had this problem and for one thing I had my gas running on reserve. I put it on the regular tank and after awhile it started doing it again. We were going down a paved road to this little country store and I passed my buddies foreman probably doing about 65 or so and my z just kind of sputerred and died completly. We pulled off the road and pull stared it and it started right up then it did the same thing and finally died. Anyways finally we saw my gas line or I mean air hose coming out of the gas cap was twisted up real bad. We straightened it and it ran fine from then until now. I found other people that had this topic posted on here and they all agreed that it was that little air hose being twisted. It may be something more serious on your quad and you would have probably noticed the hose. There's another thread, I think in the suzuki forum and there are some knowelegable people on there that have some more answers for you. Good luck and God bless.

Thanks for the quick reply!........I'll check that little vent hose.......although, I'm pretty sure it's not twisted....but it certainly could be "plugged up".......

I'll copy my original post, and post it over on the zuki thread.......

Thanks again!.....

U said it did it really bad in reverse...well its actually supposed to do that. Theres a certain speed it wont let u go past in reverse or somethin...but if you hammer it in reverse it will miss. Ive had mine 3 weeks and the only problem ive had is a bent axle...lol.

Yep Sams, you're right!......I've posted this info on several other forums, where I was informed there is a reverse "limiter" on the KFX.......

Would have been nice if Kawasaki would have put something about this in the owners manual!.....heh heh.....

Ah well, no biggie........now that I know it's the limiter kicking in, it's no big deal.......

Thanks for the info!.......

Mine was spitting and sputtering...and would die like it was out of gas...I'd open the gas cap and it had gas too. I figured I'd switch it from on, to the reserve, and that fixed it right away...I guess thats the way its setup you can be fooled thinking theres more gas in there than there really is. Hopefully, I'll be trouble free the rest of the way!

Mine did that also I looked to see if I was about out of gas and the tank looked a little less than half full but I didn't think it needed to be on reserve yet. I switched it over like thunder here said and it ran fine until I ran that gas out to.

O.k....I think you guys have solved my problem!......

Thanks to you guys, I now know there is a reverse "limiter" on the engine.......

And, come to think about it, when it was "sputtering" in forward, I did look in the tank, and it looked like I still had just under a half a tank left.......I probably needed to switch to reserve!......

Thanks again, I appreciate your help!......

Is there not a reverse limiter override button? I know my VForce has one. If not, you might ask your dealer about it. Maybe there is a way to put one on your KFX400.
