2003 Prairie 650 Shifting
Since day one (bought it new) my Prairie hasn't shifted smoothly. Most times I have to rock it back and forth slightly to get it to shift. At the very least, it grinds a bit bit when shifting into gear (both forward and reverse). Of course the dealer said this was normal. They lowered the idle speed a bit and said that was all which could be done. As with most things the dealer says, I find this very hard to believe. So my question is, should the Priaire shift smoothly without the rocking back and forth and the grinding?
Thanks,

Your shifter sounds like it needs adjusting. Go to Nyrocs website ( http://atv.dnsalias.com/tipview.cgi) . He has an excellent step by step procedure for adjusting the shifter. It sounds like its is very close and only needs a slight tweeking.

Once adjusted properly, it should shift smoothly. I've found that shifting from one gear to another is much easier if you move the selector either left or right, wait for a second, and then move it either up or down into the gear you'd like. This has the same effect as rocking the machine back and forth.

mine did the same thing when new. i would have to rock it or blip the throttle to get it to engage. someone here told me to raise the idle and low and behold...i raised the idle a touch and now she shifts like butter. never grinds and i never have to rock it. try raising the idle, it's a simple adjustment. imo, the dealer made it worse by lowering the idle.

raise the idle and it will shift, as jw said. If you raise the idle too high it will make a grinding type noise when you shift. It will be easy to find the sweet spot. I too used to have to blip the throttle to get it to shift before raising the idle. Now it shifts perfectly with little or no resistance.

Thanks Lightman and jwkawi (and everyone else). I'm heading out to the garage and give this a try this morning. It seems the easiest possible cure....making it the best place to start. If this doesn't cure it I'll try the adjustment proceedure on Nyroc's site.
Appreciate all the help...thanks guys.
