Default no spark

I have a 1985 185 klf that is not getting any spark. Have checked to see if it is the kill switch and that proved to be ok. Next I plan to test the coil. My question is what is the easiest way to check it without having to pay someone to do it.

Thanks for any help.

try removing the left hand side cover and clean the stator with contact cleaner, coils dont go bad very often so i would check everything else before replcing it,

Thanks for thr help. Warning I'm a novice when it comes to engines but have a friend helping who understands much more.

We have taken off the left side.

Question:
Is the stator the series of coils that are on the flywheel and what is the black box that sits on top of the flywheel?

Once again, thanks for any help.

Yes that is the stator ..mantoman.
also try looking for a broken wire or a wire out of place , I went crazy one day changing everything and it was a wire that went to my switch that wasnt connected all the way , TRY that first , it happens to alot of people and they always buy parts and never needed them, hope this helps you !!!!
