Default How fast in low gear?

Well I've had my 03' Prairie 650 for a little over a week now, and all I can say is WOW! I'm incredibly impressed with this machine and it's abilities. After 3 days on the Dunflops, I threw on a set of 26" Mudlites, which work great in the nasty stuff, and handle a lot better. This week I plan on getting the Black spring, and removing a shim, but haven't had any problems yet. I have been trying to run in Low gear a great majority of the time to save belt wear, but wonder as a rule how fast one should cruise in 2 low? I have some dirt roads betwen some of the trails by my house, and sometimes need to go a bit faster. With a full load of gear, I've been trying to stay under 30 in low.....any thoughts? Happy to be a new fellow Prairie owner!!!

My 03 will do 40mph in low flat out on level ground with stock size tires , so 30mph shouldn't
hurt it . With the black spring and a .06mm shim, I wouldn,t worry about belt wear.

Man that is wringing her out. If I am not going over 15mph I'll stay in low allowing short bursts. Open trails however she's in high.

I had my old 650 up to 44 mph in low once, remember their IS a rev-limiter on them so over-reving is impossible, running the 650/700's in low at speed's up to 30 mph constantly will not hurt them, they just sound like they are winding too tight...for belt/clutch life use low for riding form 0 mph up to 25-30 mph, over that use high, I put 3000 miles on a 650, beleive me if you don't want to buy belt's and clutch sheaves all the time use low as much as possible.....I never had a problem because I used low 80% of the time, I saw clutch/belt's apart at the dealer service shop destroyed after 500 miles because of high range only riding all the time.......

Stakk is right, you can do a lot with the P650 in low range. I use it as much as possible. I have ran it in the mid forties but can remember the exact speed. I even when it was new with no mods I could out run my brother in laws Rincon in low range in a 300' drag race. ALSO, you talk about acceleration,... you can be cruising along on the trail at 30 and give it WOT and be going 40 in a sec.

Just a little more info, I took my 700 out beside my folk's house earlier today and it did 46 mph in low, I let off as I still only have 175 miles on it, this 700 is about 3-4 mph faster in high and low than the 650 was with mod's......

When my P650 was new (just after the break-in period), I could get 44mph top-speed in low every time I tried it on level ground or down hill (the rev limiter always seemed to prevent a faster speed in low). Now that I have 52 hours/450 miles on my P650, it consistently tops out at 43 mph in low. Thats with 25 inch tires and a basically stock engine. Just my 2 cents... Happy trails....
