Hey, I got a question I hope someone out there can help me with. I recently bent the axle on a Prairie 650 and need to fix it. I know about the pricing of a new and after market axle, and the striating out that a machine shop can do with the bent one. My question is how hard is it to take apart and put the rear end back together? I saw on another forum some did it and said it wasn't hard and only took about 1 and a half hours but, didn't go into detail as to what you need to do. I am looking for someone to give me a little more on what exactly needs to be taken apart and if there is anything really tricky about the whole operation. If any one can give me some real help on this I would really appreciate it. Thank Brad

Thanks for the web site with the info on how to change out the axle. And to respond to your knock about being to cheap to buy a manual.... I was looking for advice on if I should do this repair myself or if I should take it to a Kawasaki dealer. If anyone out there has anyu advice on how hard this is and if there is anything really tricky about it I would really apreceate it. Thanks

It appears to be an extremely easy procedure. I personally think adjusting the valves is a lot harder.
I am just going from what I read in the repair manual (that I think other people should get). I felt the procedure looked very easy, all except for the torqueing the bearing retaining nut to 188ft lbs. Although I think you use the hubs in a vise to hold the axle while you crank on the nut, though tough part apears to be how to get a torque wrench on the nut. I would just try to estimate that torque.
You may not have to remove the bearing anyway if you just are going to get it straightened.

Taking the axle out is easy. I would straighten it if it is not too bent. NYROC will tell you if the bend is too bad the metal is fatigued from the bend.
FYI - A VForce Aftermarket axle is the trick I hear but I have not been able to find one to see the difference.
