Default Jet numbers - What do they mean?

We have all swapped jets and hunted in our little plastic boxes for just the right one. My question is what does the jet number represent. a flow, a diameter, or an assigned "size number". Has anyone measured jet diameters and made a chart? Since we are all opening up stock jets I would really like to drill them if I had the proper size drill. I have a complete number set, but the jumps between drill sizes might be too great for the precise flows that we are attempting to controll.

Comments guys?

Thanks,
Bob

I have had a couple of 700 cc sleds, one had Mukuni carbs and the other had Kehien. it was a few years ago but the recommended jetting size for the Mukuni sled was 375 to 405 depending on how cold it was. The new sled , still 700cc has a set of Kehiens that was recommending 185-190. Both sleds had the same setup so they were flowing the same amount of fuel.
