Default clean filter question

Just cleaned my filter again tonight. I have allways heard not to use gas on it because it breaks down the foam. It was so oily this time, that I broke down and sprayed it with gas, oil came right out along with all the funk. I cleaned it, resprayed it with kawi spray filter oil and its good again.
Is there a better way? some kind of cleaners that really do the job? Nothing ive tried holds a candle to the way gas gets it clean. Thanks.

I've always used gas on my foam filters, just make sure they are good and dry before re-oiling and installing. I've never had a problem as far as the foam breaking down faster, but I usually replace the foam with a K&N as soon as possible.

Thanks. I just started using gasoline and if I notice it breaking down, I will buy a new filter. I ride in way too much dust for a K&N. Anybody know if there is a filter cover, like an outer filter you can use over a stock filter? Thanks again.

FYI: I always use dish soap to wash out my foam air filters and let them dry overnite before I add the oil to the filter. It works fine for me.

Happy trails...

After a few washes and re-oils, the oil has built up so much that dish soap didnt cut it anymore. i guess it never really removed it in the first place. The gas cut it right off, no problem. Im going to the dealer to price a stock filter. That way, I can just swap them back and forth, and allways have a clean one waiting for me when i need it.

if you are going to spend any money on a filter, order a twin air. They are great filters.

Your local dealer will also have cans of cleaner for the filter. The cleaner works really well. I think it's called PJK or something similar to that. It cleans well and then you just rinse it off and all the dirt and grime just washes away.
