What to expect from my 04 Prairie 700.
#1
My wife just bought me my first quad for my B-Day. My questions are first how important is the half-throttle issue during the first 10 hrs and second what can I expect as far as fuel economy, reliability, and maintenance costs?
After reading what you guys have done to your bikes how do you keep that power under you? My stock machine is either spinning the tires or when they grip pulling impressive power wheelies.

DaRiot,
Congrads on getting a new P700! The P650/P700 machines seem to be very reliable so long as you properly maintain them (keep belt adjusted, change the oil and clean air filters often, etc.). To learn more about maintenance of the P650/P700, you can go to www.atvpower.com. It contains several useful tech tips that originated at NYROC's old website.
As for the first 10 hour break in period, I understand that there are 2 schools of thought. Some people ignore the owner's manual and just break it in the same as they plan to ride it after its broken in. Personally, I disagree with this method. I followed the owner's manual break-in procedure by turning the screw located just behind the thumb throttle on the handlebars. This screw acts as a limiter and works great for keeping the throttle from exceeding 1/2 throttle for the first 10 hours. After you put in 10 hours, you should take it back to the dealer for its initial service and then return the screw to its original position...Yeee hawwww! As for the awesome power of the v-twin motor and the endless spinning it sometimes causes...you will get used to that in time. Have fun and welcome to atv connection.

Break it in as Kawasaki says. If you run it like a racing quad all the time , and drag race it all the time you will have belt issues sooner than later. Use low range in the tricky and slow stuff. There are many out there with lots of hours and miles on them with no issues.
Get a Ricochet full skid plate.
Mine was hard to steer due to the Dunflops and untill I set the toe-in @ Zero.

DaRiot---- Give me your wife's phone number, if you ever split up. What a great woman to buy a P-700 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As for breakin, I broke in my 02 P-650 BY THE BOOK. I broke in my V-Force AND my P-700 pretty much like I ride'em----hard. They get great maintenance, but I don't "baby" my machines......
All 3 of my V-Twin KAWs. have been EXTREMELY reliable. Maintenance is the key here, IMO. Besure to maintain that drive belt! Install the "black spring" in the driven clutch, when you do that first tensioning. Have fun, you have a GREAT WIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh yeah, almost forgot.....have your wife buy some "real" tires for that machine! LOL I run Mudlites in snow, Holeshot ATRs, in everthing else. I operate in the Appalachian Mtns., for the most part. I ride year 'round.

I tried that half throttle BS for the 30 minutes or so, but I couldn't contain myself. I rode it like I normally would, and changed the oil at about 3-4 hours. I didn't give it WOT very many times. For me, it's about having fun. I don't get to ride as much as I like, so I wasn't going to be last in the group saying, "Wait up guys! I'm breaking it in at half throttle". Instead, I was infront of the pack, riding wheelies and lovin the machine! That was after the oil change BTW. I can tell you I also have a Grizzly 660 and I haven't rode it ONCE since I got the Prairie in September; I'm sure you'll have a blast on it!

Ok Ok the wife stays here!LOL
This magical Black spring....what does it cost (to purchase and install) and what will I get in return.
As far as tires go, these will have to do (until I burn them off)!
Also what should I expect as a bill for my 10 hr. service?

10 hr service is a glorified oil service. CHANGE all OILS, kick tires, etc.
The black spring costs @$22.00, not sure about labor, as I do it myself. The payback here, is belt life increase.
Once you get used to the bike, and start riding faster, you WILL be inspired to buy "real" tires, trust me! I believe most in here will agree with my statement.
Are you SURE you don't want to trade me your wife for something? I have guns, motorcycles, quads, etc. Whaddya say? LOL

Now guys I told you that my wife bought me the quad but most of the time she is about as mean as a biting sow! I messed up 13 yrs ago and taught her how to shoot too! LOL
Today I went to two dealers and neither of their svc departments knew anything about the black spring issue. Should I not do business with them or is this normal?
