It's easy to replace the cam(s). I recomend that you buy a Clymer or Haynes manual to do it.
You also must replace the follower. My Mo needs a cam also and shopping around I got several different prices from several different shops. So shop around.
It's a common failure item in the Mo. It's caused by the tilt of the engine, the intake cam is hanging out in the wind while the exhaust is in an oil bath.
I have heard of having the cam hardened which should make it last longer. Another thing would be to run either Synthetic oil or a good dino oil that contains lots of Molydysulfide (Moly). The Moly will penetrate the metal and help prevent dry starts.
Torco oil has tons of Moly, Pennzoil is next then QS I believe. Valvoline has none!
BTW: The Moly may make the clutch louder when slipped but so far my clutch is ok, just louder which I can live with if it keeps the cams alive.
Go to Http://Bobistheoilguy.com and read up on oil. It's quite fascinating and good luck with your cam replacement.
