Default Which Shim Did you use with the new belt?

I am going to the dealer tomorrow to get a new belt and some shims.Mine had only one so I am guessing it was the 1.4.I can't see anything on it. It looks pretty thick. I really want to re-install this and be done with it.I believe I saw somewhere that most just went with the .06 but was that with a new belt? I was thinking about maybe going with the .08.I was definitley out of spec (greater than 27mm).I am just getting the new belt since I am into it and will keep this as a spare. This hing only has 700 miles!

I'd recommend that you buy two .6 mm shims, one .8 mm shim and one 1.0 mm shim. That way, you can use whatever shim you need as the belt slowly wears out. That's what I did and now I can shim it to any adjustment between .6mm to 1.8 mm (keep in mind that you can use 2 shims at once).

Everyone's belt adjustments are a little different and there is no one-size-fits-all with respect to the right size shims for everyone's belt. However I can tell you that when I first adjusted my P650 belt, I used the .8mm shim to tighten the belt. Later, I put on a new P700 belt (which is a little wider than the P650 belt) and this one took two .6 mm to get it within spec. As the belt wears out, I will have to adjust the shims (use smaller size shims) to keep the belt within specs and the spare shims will come in handy at that time.

Good luck!

So are you a belivever in the 700 belt vs the 650 one too? I think I will get the shims like you said after thinking about it.With the two .6 shims I can start out at 1.2 which is a number I would not get with the combo I was going to buy.
BTW...how do you like the mudlites? I was going to get the ATR's but I keep hearing they are flat prone....even read this in a mag.

I like the P700 belt...when I first installed it, my P650 went 1 mph faster on top-end in high range and 2 mph faster on top-end in low range. It is also made of more durable material I'm told, so it should last longer than the P650 belt.

As for mudlites, I like them. The 25inch mudlites are lightweight and all mud lights are 6 ply (I've had no flats thus far - over 700 miles). Only downside is that they tend to wear down easily on hard pavement. The rubber compound is apparently very soft compared to other mud tires. I also think my tires tend to spin a lot more than they might if the tread was taller (for example, the 26 inch and taller mudlites come with much taller treads than the 25 inch mudlites ---but these taller mudlites also weight a lot more too). So there is a plus and minus with everything I guess (*more traction from taller lugs usually equals more weight of the tire to slow you down slightly).

The ATR's look cool mounted on c-series rims and a lot of folks swear by these tires in all conditions except for deep mud...but the downsides that I have read about for these tires are that they have pliable side walls causing them to not handle well on sharp corners at fast speeds (as compared to other aftermarket tires) and that some folks have had flat problems (I seem to recall that ATR's are only 4 ply - but I might be wrong about that). I'm sure that either one of these tires is big improvement over stock, but for my money I like the 25 inch mudlites.
Just my 2 cents.

I just bought the full range of shims(4). They are $5.00/per shim. Do yourself a favor and put in the "black spring" in the driven clutch. It comes out for tensioning the belt anyway.

Could you please expound on the "black spring" ? Are you referring to the EPI Black Primary spring?

What sort of performance characteristics did you notice with this spring? I have been hesistant to change anything with my clutch because it is a P700 and it seems there are a number of clutch "upgrades" assoc. with this model. I appreciate the help. I refer to the EPI SECONDARY clutch spring. It eliminate a lot of belt slip. SEE Erlandson Performance website.

Last summer, I performed some timed drag test runs on on asphalt road to see how the EPI black secondary spring affected my peformance. My results (which were posted in detail on this and other forums) were that the Black spring did not affect acceleration or top-end performance compared to the stock secondary spring. I like the Black secondary spring b/c of the added pressure/less belt slippage benefits (belt should last longer).

However, many folks have reported noticeable gains using aftermarket primary springs. But thats a whole other issue! Do a search on this thread for primary springs and you will find plenty to read. I think it was KOD or DWB that did a thorough comparison of primary springs on his P650, and I seem to recall that the stock P700 primary spring was not a bad choice for day to day trial riding.

I have been told by reliable sources, that the P-700 STOCK primary spring is pretty d@mned good for general fast trail riding. BUT I can't leave things alone, so I'll try the Dalton "blue" primary. I imagine it will be VERY CLOSE to stock.
