I'm thinking of switching to synthetic oil (amsoil 0 - 40) in March. I have heard that petroleum oil residue in engine and front gear case takes away from the synthetic oil heat transfer and slickness. I have a P650 with 1100 miles on it.

Should the engine and gear case be flushed with a solvent to get rid of varnish, etc.? If I do flush it, could it damage or screw it up someway? What would be a good solvent to use?

Just replace with the synthetic and leave it at that, will work its way out on its own!

 

I would avoid trying to rinse out the case with anything. A solvent could damage seals and you may end up clogging the screen instead of filtering through the filter.

Like Haymaker said, just make the switch.

Synthetic oil and conventional oil are totally compatable with each other. No need to flush out anything. Id check the owners manual, and see if 0-40 is recommended, before putting it in.

I'd just run it without flushing......
I'm just finishing a rebuild of my mohave engine: 380 cams, ss oversized valves, HD valve springs with titanium clips, hardened rockers, new wiseco piston, etc....You should have no problem with the Amsoil. I'm also going to the 0W-40 to break it in, etc.

 

oil is a natural cleaner, just change the oil you will be fine. you are heading in the right direction with the oil.
