haveing a problem with my 650. last weekend i was riding down on the local ice track with some people and while we were resting we were letting the quads idle to keep warmed up. mine was smoking when it idled more than 10 min. never had it do this before. the smoke smelled like burning oil coming out the exhaust. when i started riding it again it cleared up. when idled again it did it again. checked oil and fluid levels all ok. anybody ever seen this, any help would be great. oh yeah anybody out there have there tires studed and how do they work on plowed smooth ice.

What color was the smoke? White smoke is normal on a very cold day, its just the water vapor( normal byproduct of combustion). If its blue, its usually oil burning, and if its grey or black, then its rich fuel mixture.

What type of oil are you running? you are probably burning oil when you are running too. I'm guessing you should try a compression test. Your bike will run hot just idleing for 10 minutes. I never let mine idle that long.

check the oil level, too much oil ,or oil diluted by gas will cause it to smoke.

I see you have an 02 like me.After a while mine started to idle like crap and smoke too but also like you it did not use oil.Mine was definitely from a rich mixture caused from the choke cable/choke springs. The early ones had a choke cable issue.I corrected mine by changing the springs. The stock springs are VERY weak and do not return the plunger all the way.Alot of guys here were using the choke springs from a KLR 650 motorcycle.Thats what I did and now the problem is solved. After doing this it also made mine start easier. Before I always had to just touch the throttle when cranking it but now I don't.

First thing to check is your air box! Just a little too much oil can cause overlowing into the airbox. also if the machine has been tipped on its side or extreme angles could probably cause oil to go into the airbox. Remember, unlike most other quads, the carb intakes are at the bottom of the airbox. Also, crankcase vent is on the same side as the carb intakes, not on the other side of the air filter. So any little oil that gets in there (through the crankcase vent) can get sucked down the carbs.
