my battery reads at 12.4 when running and when off and when i put the lights on it drops to 11.8 if it test the 2 wires in the back of the bike it reads 12.4 with bike running. is my gen bad or is this normal

Sounds a little weak, some of those older Bayous are known for chewing up voltage regulators (rectifiers) though.

 

Voltage can be a little low at idle, try reading the volts @4000 rpm. Should be over 13 by then. If it gets over 13, id say its working fine.
