Default Cold weather start for K700

I have recently purchased a new K 700 and noticed with the cold weather that I have to babysit the throttle to keep the bike going while it is on the choke. This can be for 5 minutes or more, depending on how cold it is. Is this normal, the salesman says it is the nature of the beast? By the way, the performance of this bike, right off the show room floor, does make other riders on the trail take notice! I am very impressed with the K700.

Mike,

Your salesman is correct. This is infact the nature of the beast. The big V-Twin can be real cold blooded when your first start it. What I find works best is give the primer about 3-4 shots before starting the bike, turn on the choke and start the bike. I let the bike idle with the choke on until the bike starts to sputter. I then take the choke off, and let it idle on it's own for another 2 minutes. It usually takes 5 minutes to get her idling properly. But once she's going, watch out LOL!!! If you hear some popping sound coming from the airbox when you give it throttle, this means that it's still not warmed up enough.

You should hear the V-Twin when it's -30 outside like this past January. The sounds coming out of that motor almost makes you want to cry. But once she warms up, she's all good.

I never have to play with the throttle even before it was jetted,Just put the choke on and it starts up and revs in high idle if anything i sometimes cut back on the choke a bit, maybe it needs a little adjustment.

I jsut purchased a p650 and had similar trouble. I had to pull the choke on and touch and hold the throttle during startup and continue to hold the throttle until comming off choke. I was frusterated beyond belief and though I made a huge mistake buying mine, I wnt to 5w-30 for winter and this helps to spin the motor quickerbut in the end It was the valve lash was out of spec, the gap was getting too small. I regapped and now it starts up just with the choke! I'm still fine tuning but what a diffence also I shimmed the needles .030 to address cold weather and this has also helped with the coughing.........Tom
