Shocks??

The rings are there to stop spring compression of the top spring at a certain point. When the shocks are set up for your weight, riding type, and etc. they determine what springs to use and how far the top spring should compress. Then they select the ring or rings that will allow that amount of compression. when the top spring compresses to where the rings stop it then the compression is transfered to the larger lower spring, thus the dual rate.
