clunking on prairie 650
#1
I have a 02 prairie and it has a horrible clunking somewhere on the machine. It happens both in low gear and high gear. High gear is only when you really get on it and low gear is almost all the time. I was wondering if anyone else might of had a slimiar problem. I think that it might be in the clutches but not sure. It also does it more when the machine is warmed up.

swing arm bolt/ bearings? Some people think the out of adjustment gears shifting noise is horrible. Is it better in 4wd? Turning? Could be in the clutches / tranny if it's in low and high speeds in high is reverse ok?

I am very interested to hear some responses. I also ride an 02 p650 and have a very loud clunking noise on my machine. It is mostly happens in low range when you just leave off the gas. I would really like to know what that noise means.

Garageman: I don't think miles here mean nothing here... I got about 20,000km on my 650. Mine was doing it from the start. It is possible you really didn't notice it from the start and now it you notice it more, I knew from the start and for some reason it wasn't a problem until I replaced my first belt. The part that I had filed was the part where gear shifter handle hit the black plastic in low range spot, My dealer did it for me. This allow the shifter just to nudge ahead a little more than it was before. It didn't require much filling either, You really have to look to see it. I think you really should be focusing on proper adjustment of the gear shifter and try pulling the fuse on the EBC; you loose 4wd at the same time but it will tell you where your problem is. If the noise goes away then it's probably your bearing on your engine brake. If you never looked at your belt deflection I would do that too but one would think it could be loose but it if was that loose it would trip your belt sensor. If you want to see if it's your belt give your bike a rev in neutral.

Isn't the clunking sound when letting off the throttle caused my the shifter linkage being to loose or tight?

Yes, it is mostly in low range. Hardly ever does it in high except for when you really get on the gas. I have the rear end out of it right now ot check the rear u joint but that we still good. I did find that the swingarm bearings and seals were both bad. I will definitly be looking at the adjustment of the shift linkage. Maybe that is just my problem.
