Who has temp guages
#1
I want to get a temp guage for my 700. Where is the best place to get them and what is everyone running. Mechanical or 12 volt. I have always liked mechanical better myself but 12 volt may be just as good. Do you have to buy one for a atv or will a autometer work.

I bought a 12v for under 20 Bucks at my local parts store. I like it cause it has a light inside so I see it well at night. The fan only kicks in at about 205 Deg.F. so I put a manual switch in parallel with the temp. activated fan switch of the bike. I usually put the fan on when I take off, It tends to hover around 180 Deg. , I find that more comferting than 205 - 220 Deg . When I get in deep water or mud I flip off the fan switch . If I forget to flip it back on , it will still go on automatically at 205.
I strongly suggest it since the V-Twin engine head gaskets are very susceptible to overheating. I learned it the hard way!!

It started to blow coolant back in the rad. reserve tank, and out the overflow. The compresion was blowing air in the coolant through the breach in the rear piston. Luckilly I found out soon enough that they only had to replace the gasket . The way to check for a breach is to remove a spark plug and put air pressure in the hole(aprox. 40 PSI). while the rad. cap is off. If there is a gasket breach you will see the coolant level rise and might even see bubbles come out .
Do the same for each piston.

Just check out my pics. in the gallery. It might explain why I suggest installing a temp. guage. I like to find its' limitations. I now know it loves mud and water plenty . Thats why I made a Nice set of stainless teeth for my BEAST!. And lets be honest ; I didn't buy the thing to go to Mass on Sundays LOL.
