P-700-Front boot replacement help!
#1
I blew a boot on the front left outer (u-joint ?). Need help on what to do. Take in. Do it myself. How much. How to do it. I want to ride this week on a outing I have planned. I thought I could make one out of a large inner tube and use wire or clamps. And use the caulk/foam method.
Anyone else have this problem ! Or thoughts!
Thanks Much,
Northman

I went to an auto parts store and got a boot from a power steering unit and it worked great. They have these pull and crimp clamps that work great. Just cut the boot to fit and fill it with grease. The job is easy, do it yourself.

Northman,
I would definitely order a replacement boot kit to replace the one you blew. The boot is a lot tougher and thicker than an inner tube. I don't think an inner tube would last longer than an hour on there.
I just did the inner boot of my P700, and it was fairly easy. It took me 3 hours, but I could do the next one in 1 hour. The hardest thing for me was to figure out how to get the small end of the boot over the knuckle (I ended up using a piece of PVC pipe to stretch the end open).
I bought my kit from EPI that came with grease and the bands and a simple tool to use. I ended up buying the $15 tool to do it and I am glad I did. It made the job a lot easier. Someone else posted to my thread and had a $19.95 boot kit replacement.
Check out the thread here.
It really isn't hard to do. Good luck.
