I'm curious, what is the big advantages of a chain drive over drive shaft (other than lighter weight and the ability to change sprocket sizes)? Personally, I like the low maintenance and high dependability of drive shafts.

I agree for trail riding situations the Shaft drive is awesome, BUT....
Chain drive can give you
Lighter weight
Gearing combinations
more HP to the rear wheels
options for any lenght swing-arm you desire for your particular set-up.
We all know that their is MAJOR power to be had in the 700 V-twin , But you need a better set-up to take ful advantage of it.
BIgger.

I read that article in my new DirtWheels. I wonder how long it will take until we see something like this on the open market. I would definately be interested in trying it out if I haven't sold my V by then. I wonder what the cost would be though...

Mine is on it's way to get billet clutch covers built and then it goes to Skat trax to get the chain drive made for it. It's no lighter than the stocker but it does have my 800cc kit in it. It take about 100cc bigger motor to run a shaft drive over a chain system to make them the same rear wheel HP. It was gps at 90.6 on the lake bed in Cal. The biggest reason for going to the Chain drive is handling. The more torque you put to the shaft the more it pushes the swing arm down working against the shock. (not good for whoops)
