What is a rectifier? Saw on Ebay

A rectifier is a device that converts AC electricity to Dc electricity. Your stator in your quad generates AC so the rectifier changes it to DC so it can be used on the dc electrical devices of your quad such as the ignition and charging the battery. A rectifier/regulator as this one is also regulates the dc output voltage to the proper level. I do not know if this is a scam or not but the principle staed does work and may or may not be buit into the unit. By opening the field the magnetic rotor does not have to cut the magnetic flux lines and will turn much easier, thus saving horsepower. But no electricity is produced to power your quads systems. They are saying that they allow it do this when the battery is near full charge and let just the battery power things for awhile, saving the normal HP used for charging to go to the wheels. I do not believe an 8% gain is available here though. And when it does come back on to charge the battery it will take more power than normal to recharge the battery from its lower state of charge, costing you more HP until the battery is full again. I used to do something similar on my pro street drag car. i had a swich installed on the field circuit of the alternator and mounted on the dash. just before a run I would flip the switch to open the field and disable the alternator. This would then use just battery power for the 1/4 mile run and save the HP from running the alternator for the wheels. The retifier on ebay may do this but i am skeptical that it is much of an advantage.

What is the 8% they are claining? HP, current? The generator system on the Prairie is rated at about 25 Amps at 14 Volts or about 350 Watts if I remember correctly. Now with 1 HP being about 746 Watts, even going from maximum load to no load is only good for about 1/2 a HP, more like 1%. Besides, most of the time you are riding in daylight, the current draw will average only 10 amps or less anyway.

I put one on my Prairie today. Dunno , seemed like snake oil to me too, but she sure ran better than before. Pulled stronger and ran smoother. Was able to make a hairpin slider easily that always gave me grief until today. Anyway, for $50 if nothing else I have a replacement for the $150 stocker should it ever go bad (rectifier kinda hangs out there in the mud waiting to get ripped off by an errant tree branch kicked up by the rear wheel).
