Enlighten me! Why do CVT trannies have to whine so much?
#1
This is my first experience with CVT trannies....I have shied away from them until now. I have a new Kawi BF, and find the whine somewhat annoying. Is this just a characteristic of this type of trans? How does the Kawi CVT's compare in noise to other brands? Is there anything that can be done to lessen or eliminate this? What is all of your opinions on the BF trannies' noise output. Average? Noisier? Who do you guys think puts out the BEST CVT transmission for overall operation. Please educate me, guys!!!

scottd,
Think Nascar because that is what you have under your ****, square cuts gears, not the CVT. The whine will fade after a while as they wear in but think Power & Strenght.
Think Nascar and giver.

I just remembered my prairie is 1 year old next week and I dont know if the whine went away or if I dont just notice it anymore. But the only whining I hear is my old lady bitchin cause i always use up her lawnmower gas. SHUT UP AND CUT THE GRASS!

Kawi uses square cut rather than sycro cut gears, both because they are cheaper to manufacture, & are stronger... the disadvantages, are noise, & shifting ease... you may need to adjust your idle, down the road, to allow easier shifting...
the KBEC system is also pretty noisy, & can make a whine sound...
not all whining sounds are bad... the whine of a blower under the hood is a good sound, the whine of your buddies, when they realize you dominate them on there "other" brand quads, is a good sound... you'll get used to the noises your Kawi makes... ride on...

Bah! my 03 is 2 years and a month old and the whine has not gone away at all..if anything it has even gotten a bit louder..it is also a whole helluva lot louder than polaris' similar sound...you can always tell whats coming down the trail towards you..you hear the whine WAY before you hear the motor...it is and shall be(so far) my only real bitch about the machine..for a 6k quad with the resources of a major corporation you'd think that they would never have released such an annoying machine...Focus groups do wonders ppl...focus..focus..lol..seriously though..if I had of known that it was THAT loud,I never would have gotten it..i would have opted for the grizz..It does not matter how much power an engine produces if your too annoyed with the noise to ride the damn thing..you dont hear the Yamaha's with auto trannys make even so much as a whisper..that includes the Kodiaks and Grizz.those bikes are perfectly quiet..

The only thing you hear on a Grizz is the crunch when it falls over lol. I almost bought a Grizz I liked the looks. But if I want to feel tippy i'll drink another beer
