Default Review: stock V-force cams installed on P650 (with Dyna cdi too)

UPDATE: INSTALLATION COMPLETED!!!

Stayed up til 3:15am last night to finish the installation. Cranked her up and she purrrs like a kitten! Here are my impressions after taking it on a short 10 minute ride today (5 miles). NOTE: I made no jetting changes so far, I will check my plugs later and see if I need to rejet. I was a tad bit rich before this cam install (but the motor ran strong anyway), so I suspect I may not need to rejet now.

Starting:
Not sure if its the v-force cams, the new spark plugs or the adjustment to my DAJs (I replaced the air snorkel lines with slightly larger hose and added a 90 degree elbow for less restriction where lines exit the air box), but it now starts much easier than ever before...no choke needed for cold starts!!!

Sound of Motor Reving:
It sounds a little different when I rev the motor...maybe its my mind playing tricks on me, but it does seem to sound a little different when it revs up in neutral as compared to the old sound with stock P650 cams.

Wheelies:
Same strong bottom end for sure! I have a Dyna CDI and it pulls hard wheelies from dead stop if you get good traction (I hit BIG wheelies today on dry grass and pavement from a dead stop). I did not notice the ability to get wheelies from 10 mph and up as some folks had reported with the P650/P700 cam reposition mod. Nevertheless, it certainly pulls hard from that speed (same or similar as with P650 cams).

Acceleration:
Noticed a definite improvement near top-end! The Dyna CDI alone seemed to improve acceleration from 50 mph to top-speed (and gave me an additional 3mph)...With addition of the stock V-force cams today, it now seems to pull even harder than before from about 40mph on up to very top-speed. Mid range seemed improved slightly, but not as noticeable as top-end. I really like the top-end now and hope this will help me keep up with some of the sport quads who normally smoke me when we get to speeds above 35 mph or so.

Top-speed:
74 mph today!!! BUT that is not an accurate speed b/c I had 22" tires on my P650 (that' right 22" tires! Stock v-force wheels on back and special 22" tire combo upfront)...B/c my 22" tires are 13.6% smaller than my 25" tires, my speedo is 13.6% faster than normal speed. That means I was actually running 65mph today. ***NOTE: Top-speed on same road with 25" tires and stock P650 cams was 66mph...so I expect to be running much faster than 66mph once I re-install my set of 25" tires and run the same road again! Yippee!

Conclusion:
It was only a 10 minute ride, but I felt like the V-force cams and 22" tires was a fierce combo for acceleration purposes! I am very pleased that I did not notice any bottom end loss in power and that it seemed noticeably stronger on top-end. I look forward to running my newly modded P650 in my next XC race on Sept 12th to see how it holds up against the other quads I normally race. Wish me luck!

PS - Thanx to Mickey D. for selling me a used set of V-force cams for a very reasonable price! This mod was definitely worth the money IMO!

Happy trails...

Great write up Mikeyboy. Im glad those worked out for you. The 74 topend was impressive even if it was with the 22" tires. I cant wait to hear what it does with stock 25" tires.

KOD,
Thanx for the kudos. Just to clarify for anyone else who may read this thread, my "74" mph on the speedo yesterday on 22" tires was inaccurate b/c the speedo is set up for 25" tires. Therefore, I figure I was actually doing about 65mph yesterday. I don't want anyone to think I actually ran 74mph with 22" tires mounted (well, maybe someday I'll get there ).

I'm personally very pleased with the 65 mph top speed (on 22" tires) b/c I used to hit 66mph on the same road with 25" tires (and the P650 cams)...so I should now definitely be able to get more top-speed with the 25" tires mounted (and the v-force cams installed).

BTW, not sure when I'll get a chance to mount the 25" tires again and test top-speed (got some other issues to fix right now like KEBC problems and worn out swingarm bearings). But you can bet I'll report back here with my top-speed when I do.

Happy trails...
