Default Idle speed without tach??

What is the best way to set the idle speed if you dont have a tach? Ive heard it so many different ways I cant tell anymore how it should sound. So besides just listening or buying a tach what the best way?

Set the idle speed high enough that it shifts into gear easily, but not so high that it grinds when it goes in gear.
