Default Help with drive belt?

I recently shredded my drive belt on my prairie, my dealer wanted $200.00 to fix it so I thought I would give it a try myself. I ordered a Dayco HP2018 belt from mfg. supply. I went to put it back together today and either something is screwed up or the belt is to large. I called Dayco and they looked up the part number and they said I have the right belt. The problem is its to long. I can slip it right over the pulley with my fingers. When I went to check the deflection, heck I can just about squezze it and make the top and the underside of the belt touch each other. Theres no way I could ever shim that much out. It probably has a deflection of 4 or 5 inches. So I would appreciate it if anybody out there can point out something stupid that maybe I'm not doing right. When I put the belt on it sits down flush on the driven pulley the way they show it in the pictures. Thanks DennisC

After you put the belt on you did rotate the belt to make it come all the way to the top of the secondary pulley didnt you? I will measure my stock P650 belt in a little bit and tell you how long it is and the width.

I'm guessing your calling the secondary pully the one towards the rear of the quad? If so yes, its completely at the top of it and still all kinds of slack in the belt. Thanks DennisC

Dennis, I measured my belt and got the following.

Measured the width according to the service manual and got 1.166"

Pulled a string tight around the outside of the belt and cut it. Then pulled the string tight next to a tape measure and got 34" exactly.

Next turned the belt inside out and measured again same as above and got 35" exactly.

If you got 33.6" then somehting else has to be wrong.

BTW, I measured twice also.

You might want to try removing the primary and secondary pulleys to see if any of the belt is behind them. How badly did you shredd the belt. Did it break and cause any visible damage?

Default Help with drive belt?

I finally got it back together. I did haft to take the pulleys apart because I couldn't get all the pieces of the belt out. I was running 62 mph down the road when it shredded, the belt totally exploded, theres not hardly anything at all left but some fuzz. I think the biggest piece was about 2 inches long. It used to top out at 57 mph here lately its been getting over 60 mph. I wander if that has anything to do with the belt being to loose? I first tried a Dayco belt and it probably would have worked but when I went to check the deflection I did not have the straightedge on the drive pulley correctly. So when I measured the deflection it was way off. So I purchased one from my Kawi dealer and when I put it on I rechecked the directions on Nyroc's and Kissofdeath's site and noticed my screw up. So I put it back together without making any changes to the shims and my deflection came out to 25cm. I just left the OEM belt on. I'm going to send the Dayco back, cause my dad stopped by and was checking out the belts and said the OEM would probably be alot tougher belt. I'll take his word on it, cause hes been in that line of work for 40 years. I didn't see any visible signs of damage to the inside of my Prairie, thankfully. I would have liked to test the Dayco belt out and seen how it lasted. Were getting ready to go to Hatfield McCoy riding area and I didn't want to take a chance breaking down 60 miles back in the middle of no where. I never dreamed the difference a new belt would make. Mine had been squealing on take off for the last couple hundred miles but I just overlooked it. With the new belt on I was out pulling wheelies on the asphalt. I guess with the performance slowly fading away I never realized it. But now its like WOW - I remember now why I bought this. Thanks everyone for all the help. DennisC
