P650/700 Primary clutch mod
I have some pictures up of the clutch mod I had done today. I removed .060" off the cover plate and outer primary sheave. I havent got to test top end speed yet but will this coming weekend. I can say the the rpm engagement and engine braking are still the same.
The pictures are in my Prairie 650 mods album, look for Primary clutch mods.

Excellent job... I was wondering on the advantage of machining the cover that way, but the washers should do the trick... you might be concerned about the lock washers galling the aluminum up, with multiple spring changes...
the machine shop that is doing mine, believes he has "something" there to get the spider off... I think I'd prefer to machine both sheeves...
please post some pics of the belt sheeve wear marks, after you get the chance to WOT... it would be nice to get some idea of the "best" amount to machine off, without compromising some of the bottom end engagement...
it was also discussed previously, that the secondary may bottom out, before the primary reaches the maximum gear ratio advantage obtainable... I'm running the 360 belt, which is supposed to be a few mm longer... that may actually help out this situation, should it arise...
any insite as to how you chose the amounts of material to remove???

Thanks Mike, I would rather have took .030" off each side also but as long as the belt doesnt wear then I should be fine. Im pretty satisfied so far with this Dalton Orange/Blue. If it all works good together this coming weekend then I wont be changing the primary spring again.
I will post more pictures probably next Wednesday or Thursday at the latest. Bottom end hasnt changed at all. It still feels just as strong as it ever did. The rpm engagement hasnt changed "love my tach" and engine braking on level ground hasnt changed.
You may be on to something with the belt bottoming out. Im not sure about that at all. My main concern is how much the belt will raise on the primary now that it has another possible 3/8" more travel. I have rode two miles in the yard and checked the belt. The belt looks like it always did. I even had a chatter noise when I first put it on and now its all but gone at idle. Idle was the only time I heard it anyway.
Dale Brooks aka Red650 told me about the .030" off each sheave. He said he has already done his and seen somewhere around 74-75 mph if I remember correctly. He told me about doing the .060" off the cover plate but never mentioned the spacers that was needed.

I wood buy a new stock cover.Because it could throw it out of balance or get the whole thing balanced again. It could be hard on the crank bearins at the higher rpms.Bartlet is right .The one I seen tonight done they milled the inside of the cover for spider clearance.Thats way I ended up just buying the new 700 sheaves I just don't want to see you tear up your motor for a couple of mph

I understand and thanks for the thoughts. I have to work 12 hours tomorrow and Thursday. Im leaving out on Friday. I will just have to see what happens. I was in a hurry to get this done. It may have been a bad decision or may not have but I will live with it whatever the outcome is.
