Synthetic Oil
#12
Oil is the life blood of the engine so it's up to the individual. Granted non-synthetic oils if changed frequently will do an adequate job. If you want to keep your quad for 5 or 6 more years or longer I'd go with synthetic. On the other hand if you think you'll be getting rid of it within a year or so don't waste the money on a quality synthetic. I still have my '89 Warrior, has always run Amsoil synthetic, never rebuilt, guessing it has 20,000 plus miles, still runs as strong as the day I bought it. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you want to run your quad hard, like I do and want to keep it in top shape, like I do, and want the best piece of mind for your engine, run synthetic oil. Amsoil, Mobil 1, Redline are all top notch!

Garyvegas- I switched over after I did my first oil change, there was NO carbon, varnish and sludge that was able to built up and get rid of in the first place. Ive talked to other Riders and Racers that really run there quads super hard like myself and Most use products like Royal Purple, Klotz and Red Line. I used just about a case of the Amsoil 0w40 and to me It just seemed like it would get dirty fast? I switched over to Royal Purple so far shes clean and personaly I just feel its a better product. The Company just like the others I mentioned Have a focus on high Performance Racing Products Only! Unlike Amsoil where you can also get your multi-vitamin's and lawn and garden products, Oh and become like Granny Jenkins and get RICH from building you MLM downline!~LOL. I really think any Oil will for you as long as you make sure its changed regluarly and make sure your running clean Oil. But when It comes to High Performance I will use what the Pros that arnt pay to use it, use! ~coop

All this debate about motor oil reminds me of the guy who spends $1200 for a German-made rifle scope. Later he heads to the woods believing he's suddenly an expert marksman.
Sure, high-performance oil has merit when used in high-performance engines maintained and driven by true professionals. Otherwise, it just makes you feel like one.
I use Valvoline in every engine that I own.

I heard that guy who spent $1200 for a German-made rifle scope, Later shoot a super large caribou and then when they where heading back and where attacked by a 18' Grizzly Bear that was tracking them, He shoot the Bear as well and he saved the day!~LOL.

At this point I swear by Amsoil. I've had the current oil in my Prairie for 6 months. I pumped a little bit out the other day and poured it a glass cup. I then poured some new oil in another glass cup. Side by side...the difference was slight...very slight. I had to look at it for a minute before I could notice it at all. I live in Southern California. Let me tell you, it gets HOT here. And I drive my Prairie around in that heat and when I saw how clear that oil was after six months...I am sold!
Frankly, it makes no darn sense to be using dino Arab oil. Synthetics are far superior in every way (the single exception being a vehicle break in period).

oc: Sounds like you paid about average for your bikes.
On your oil, if you change it every 300 miles or a couple of times a season, and you keep your air filters clean and sealed from dust, the oil and filters you are using are fine. Anything that meets the specs in your manual is ok as long as you follow the maintenance schedule.
The advantage of Amsoil (or any brand synthetic) 0W-40, is that the oil is circulated more quickly on startup and therefore better protects a dry engine that has been sitting for days. Also, the synthetics do not drain off as quickly, so they protect better that way too. I have read that about 20% of engine wear occurs on startup, so the faster the oil gets to where it is needed, the better.
You can go to the Amsoil website and read about the advantages of synthetic oils.
