Synthetic Oil
#1
Hi Guys
I would like to switch to fully synthetic oil in my 04 KVF 700 with 200 miles on it. Is it a good idea and what is the best oil to use. I don't care about the cost.

Hey joelm
I'm no expert, but go to www.bobistheoilguy.com
and check out anything you ever wanted to know about oil.
Some of the guys swear by AMSOIL, but I am not convinced
They also say REDLINE is a great full syn oil, available at some auto parts stores
I presenty am running Mobil 1 red cap 10w40 (I Think) and I have never noticed any improvement over regular oil. And i run pretty hard. Some say syn will keep your motor cooler, but my fan still runs about the same
I think it is all about changing oil often , not what kind you use. IMO
PS--buy your oil filters at wal mart, only $2.00 get a super tech ST7317---they are made by Champion and are a little bigger than stock--and they have proven theirselves to me by not leaking after a stump went into it and crushed it pretty bad---continued riding the rest of the day with no leaks

The problem I had with Amsoil is it seemed to get dirty fast, I switched to Royal Purple and Im very happy with there Product, They also make a great little synthetic spray called Maxiefilm the product is worth trying. Im a fan of Synthetic's and feel they offer the best in High Proformance protection when it comes to your ATV. Ive heard good things about RedLine as well, Do a search on yahoo or google and check out there web sites, the products can be bought online. With Oil Filters other then The kawasaki that will work on the V-Force Scotts Performance Stainless it the Best, But will set you back 100 bucks! Purlator ML, fram filter ph, amsoil smf, AC Delco etc. I've used a few and there all ok to use, My last filter was an amsoil, now Im using a Purlator ML. Im sure some will chime in and add what they like and also add to the list? there are a bunch of filters that work on the V's..~coop

I believe a search would produce test results on synthetic oil brands and rate them if I remember right.
I use synthetic Amsoil in all my engines and auto trannys. Watch out for synthetic 'blends' advertised as synthetic oil. Should be 100% synthetic. Made in USA too.

I swear by AMSOIL
here is my proof - I have a prairie 650 and a V Force 700
I ran stock oil at break in, AMSOIL 100% Syn. 0w40 after break in.
I also use AMSOIL oil filters in both
I have a f350 dually (1988) with 100k miles - I use AMSOIL in it, too (along with AMSOIL filter)
My 650 is used primarily for mudding and deep water. Being in Florida, it gets HOT here.
A few months ago, after a full day of mudding, My prairie started to overheat. The rad. was clogged.
I tried to limp back to camp, but no luck, the bike was running hot, and not getting better.
I ended up running for a few minutes, stopping for a cool down, and running for a few minutes.
It took several hours to get back, but I made it.
I figured my trip was ruined. I had no extra oil for an oil change. Upon my arrival at camp,
I flushed my clogged radiator for an hour - replaced my rad. fluid with H2O-and checked my oil.
The oil was brown, but not dark brown. Good enough to keep running. So I saved my trip and kept riding for the weekend.
When I returned home, I did an oil change. The oil looked good for the trauma it went through.
Have you ever cut open an oil filter? I do every time. Try it with your next oil change. When I cut it open, I see everything ... dirt, metal filings, etc.
I expected to see some metal in the filter, but there was very little.
I attribute this to the oil.
I guess any syn. oil would offer the same protection, but AMSOIL is made in the USA
and if I can take a few $$$ from the arabs and give it to America, I will.
AMSOIL is the same price as Mobil Syn. - and they ship it directly to my home.
I swear by the stuff. I use it in my generator, too.

We use Amsoil in both quads, and the '03 Ram 3500 4X4. Use whatever you like, we're real happy with the Amsoil products. These toys cost a lot of money, and we wanted the best for them. Reasearch it yourself, and then go with what you find. (Mrs. Q)

Amsoil 0w-40 4 stroke is the way to go. I've got it in all my quads. They run cooler in the hot weather and I've got piece of mind that I'm getting superior protection on start up and in cold weather with 0w-40 weight. Marylandatv, when you first switch over to synthetic your oil probably will look dirty the first couple of changes, that's because the engine is getting rid of all the carbon, varnish and sludge that built up using dino oil.

I'm trying to remember the last time I've hear of an oil related failure.....oh, I can't remember ONE. Not that there hasn't been.
I use Valvoline ATV oil, non syn. Change it often and your engine will last.
