my brothers 650 prairie overheats after about 5 minutes of riding. this just started happening after a long ride where did overheat at the end because of mud on the radiator. he has the blue ice or whatever it is that supposed to make it run cooler he did this about 4 months ago. could the thermostst cause this problem? he is going to flush the system to if that works. other than that i dont know. the resevoir is full so is the radiator. any suggestions? oh yeah the radiator is clean to. at least of mud[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]

 

Recently a co rider had heating problems with his 700.The problem was due to a broken hose clamp on the radiator hose connected to the egine behind the resevoir. The system would not pressure up and heating resulted. Another co rider checked his and found a broken clamp also.

 

Evans NPG + seems like the ultimate solution to overheating. Has anyone tried using this. Another solution is to use "Water wetter", but I think Evans should work better. Here's their site.
Even though my P-650 doesn't overheat, whenever I come to a stop it seems like the fan is running and continues to run on and off for a few minutes.

I see this is an old thread, but I'm wondering how the problem was solved. I'm having the same problem with a 2003 Prairie 650 I bought used recently. I needed another ATV, and I have a 2002 650 that I really like, so when I found this '03, I couldn't pass it up. Unfortunately, the '03 overheats (at least the warning flashes on the screen and the fan runs constantly) any time it is ridden at low speed or in the heat of the day. Ride in the evening or at higher speeds, and it flashes less frequently. The obvious solution is to ride the thing full out all the time, I guess, but then I'm leaving my wife behind all the time.

I've spotted no leaks in the cooling system, and I topped off the overflow container enough that coolant came out of the drain hose when I started it up and ran it for a few minutes. Do these things have the same kind of thermostat as cars and some bikes? Might that be the problem? A sticking thermostat?

 

my brute 650 was over heating this weekend also, but found it was a poor conection under the seat ! my fan wouldnt kick in , but after i played with all the connections it was good again after i got it home i greased all the connections seems good now ! hope it doesnt happen again !

 

Glad you found an easy solution, though I don't know how long it took to actually FIND it. ;+) That's sure not my problem. My fan runs most of the time and long after the thing is shut off.

 

uv provably already checked your rad 4 mud and is it posable the coolant level low if thease are good i think u need to check the core on your rad may be pluged or fouled !

 

Thanks. Yeah, I'm pretty sure the rad is free of mud and debris. I ordered a service manual yesterday so I can remove body work without damaging anything and get at the rad to check connections and to try flushing it out.

 

Not sure what year yours is or if there is differences but on my '03 the coolant drain is on the left side behind the plastic for the coolant. You just need to take a few screws out and then the drain is on the bottom of the pump casing. Easy to get to and drain, sprays out pretty good at first though. Just drained my cause I am sick of it overheating. I am going to put on a HL radiator relocation kit and a triple flow radiator on my front rack.

 

I wonder if the blades on the pump impeller are warn out ??? this happns on race bikes . also i ran regular not premium in mine and that helped out alot too , less heat on my legs ect, good luck ! also it cant hurt oto try a new thermostat either.
