P700 Winch
#1
I'm installing the WARN winch onto my P700. I'm going to follow the directions.......unless my vast library of technical info (YOU GUYS) say otherwise. Any problems I should know of..or just follow the directions?
Thanks in advance for your help fellas.
ps..Although I do not post often..I read often. And this is still...BY FAR... the best site, with the best regulars of any site I've ever found out there. Mostly just riders comparing notes...tech tips..riding spots..etc.
Something to be proud of...
Now back to that winch question.....

I also installed mine. The directions from warn were some what useful.
Mounting
The only problem I encountered was lining up the rear two bolts of the bracket. The Bracket has two nuts welded on. The nuts were not threaded properly so I had to take the whole thing back out and re-thread the nuts...I would just make sure the bolts thread in first, it will save you allot of aggravation. (45min)
Wiring
Make sure you have some time allot into your schedule. I am very picky on how the wires were run. This part took some time but is pretty self explanatory. Make sure you have allot of zip ties. I mounted the solenoid under the seat and zipped tied it rather then bolting it to the frame. So fare its the best location Ive seen. (3hrs)
The only problem I have with the winch is the break release. I am forced to power out. For some reason I can only pull out about 4 in. and it wont pull out. I still have not found the reason for this.
Good luck

PS - I have also noticed that my cable tends to rub against the black plastic piece located just above the winch (I think its part of the plastic shroud that directs air into the radiator). My cable is pretty mangled/knotted up now and I'm thinking of replacing it with plasma rope...I hear good things about it.
Happy trails...

after you get your winch installed be ready to purchase some type of aftermarket front spring setup because the weight of the winch really screws the front suspension up. also, where you could wheellis with ease before, now wheel spin and digging trenches is all 2wd mode will be good for. i used the progressive suspension variable rate springs with a preload adjuster on my prairie and they are awesome in every aspect. but if tires dont make a world of difference in the traction department i will have my winch on ebay asap because my yard and ranch land cannot take the trench digging that my prairie dishes out now.

I mounted a Warn 2.5 on my Prarie 700 with no real problems, but it is time consuming. To do it right you have to take the entire front clip off. With all of the front plastic off you will be able to run the wires, and wire tie them away from all the moving or hot parts. In the front above the radiator, you'll find that there is a brown wire (switched power) with a blade terminal on it wrapped up with a ground wire for accessories, that is where you can hook up the thin wire from your winch.
The solenoid mounts real nice right under the seat behind the battery on the frame crossmember. Just run the power wires to the winch on the left side of the frame to avoid all the shifter linkage. I ran the blue and yellow wires all the way up front on teh inside, and cut a couple of holes through the plastic piece that sits flate above the winch to allow the wires to reach the winch.
I mounted my mini-ricker switch to the left side handlebar, and had to use a dremel toll to grind out some of the plastic shroud on the handlebars to have the clearace. I have since heard of an easier way. I understand that you can take a bolt out of the rear brake lever assembly and place the switch mount there, and re-tighten the bolt.
I can't see paying the dealership what they want to charge for this. It's not hard to do, but time consuming, it took me an afternoon to get it done. Keep your nuts and bolts organized so you know where they go, you'll have a bunch of them once you got it all apart.
Good luck
